Would you believe, the forest is only 15 minutes away from my home, and I’ve never visited, or even knew it existed, until 2 weeks ago. I visited for a second time yesterday with my friend and neighbour, Barbara. It’s such an amazing, magical place, so totally awe-inspiring. We spent several wonderful hours here.
Llandegla Forest [Welsh: Coed Llandegla) covers 6.5 kilometres in Denbighshire, North East Wales. The forest is used for a range of recreational activities including walking and mountain biking. The Offa’s Dyke path passes through here.
The forest and adjacent moorland are important habitats for the Black Grouse, which is declining in many parts of England and Wales. The birds are increasing here due to a programme of special land management.
There are several walking trails – the Reservoir Trail, the Black Grouse Trail, the Llandegla Forest Trail and the Moorland View Trail. We chose the Black Grouse Trail, which meanders about 2 miles through the forest with the final part of the walk taking us around the tranquil Pendinas Reservoir, before dropping down to the Visitor Centre and Cafe.
Although we didn’t see any Black Grouse, we did see hundreds of frogs, spawning in the far end of the reservoir!
So if you feel like getting away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and being immersed in the flora and fauna of one of the UK’s best managed woodlands, then Coed Llandegla Forest could be the place you have been searching for.
With way-marked footpaths suitable for all abilities and fitness levels that take in the very best views of the forest it’s an amazing place to take stock, relax and enjoy time with friends and family.
